Paediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

What Is It?

Surgical procedures for children range from removal of extra teeth, exposure of teeth that do not have adequate space for eruption, reconstruction of congenitally missing teeth, including bone grafting and implant surgery, or correcting consequences associated with cleft palate, syndromes, previous trauma or tumor removal. In some instance surgical treatment may be a necessary component of orthodontic treatment, and would be recommended by your orthodontist. We also provide surgical care for paediatric pathology.

Children are always seen for consultation prior to surgery to allow Dr. Freilich to perform an assessment of the scope of surgery required, select the appropriate anesthetic for each particular situation.and provide an opportunity for your child to develop a rapport with our office. Our paediatric patients are often treated within our facility, where we are able to offer the full scope of sedation and anesthesia services. More major surgical procedures are performed at Humber River Hospital, where Dr. Freilich has full staff privileges.

Children under the age of 18 years MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for their consultation, surgical appointment and post-surgical follow-up.

Dr. Freilich is one of very few oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Canada with advanced, fellowship-level training in paediatric surgery. Our practice is very pleased to provide surgical procedures for children. We manage a wide range of paediatric oral surgical problems, with particular experience in the management of children with the following conditions: ectodermal dysplasia, oligodontia, Down syndrome, cleft lip and palate, cleidocranial dysplasia, cerebral palsy, and Gorlin syndrome.
